Level 10 Unit 02: High Literary, Poetic & Classical Grammar Echoes (-(으)ㄹ진저, -거들랑, -더이다, -느니라)
To appreciate Korean classical literature, historical dramas (사극), poetry, and philosophical treaties, one must recognize archaic and literary grammatical relics.
1. -(으)ㄹ진저 (Solemn Imperative / Exhortative Vow)
An archaic, high-poetic marker delivering a solemn commandment, eternal wish, or sacred vow.
Examples:
- 어둠 속에서도 희망의 불꽃을 꺼뜨리지 말진저.
(Even amidst deep darkness, let not the flame of hope be extinguished.) - 진실을 추구하는 자여, 영원히 정의의 길을 걸을진저.
(O seeker of truth, walk thou ever upon the path of justice.)
2. -거들랑 (Hypothetical Literary Conditional / "If Ever...")
A classical, emotive counterpart to -(으)면 / -거든, used in traditional songs, letters, and literature.
Examples:
- 고향에 가거들랑 어머니께 내 소식을 전해 다오.
(If ever you go to my hometown, please convey news of me to my mother.) - 그 사람이 내 안부를 묻거들랑 그저 잘 지낸다고만 말해 주오.
(Should that person ask about my well-being, pray tell them merely that I am well.)
3. -더이다 (Archaic Polite Retrospective / "So I Witnessed...")
A classical, highly deferential retrospective ending (the polite historical ancestor of -더라고요).
Examples:
- 달빛 아래 비친 그분의 모습이 참으로 처연하더이다.
(His countenance illuminated beneath the moonlight was truly sorrowful to behold.) - 어르신께서 이미 떠나고 계시지 않더이다.
(I witnessed that the elder had already departed and was no longer there.)
4. -느니라 / -(으)니라 (Authoritative Proclamation of Universal Truth)
Used by elders, monarchs, or philosophical narrators to declare immutable natural truths or moral precepts.
Examples:
- 뿌린 대로 거두느니라.
(As one sows, so shall one reap.) - 지나친 욕심은 결국 화를 부르는 법이니라.
(Excessive greed ultimately summons calamity.)
