Easy Korean - Unit 8: Advanced Situational Expressions (Defending oneself)
Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 8: Advanced Situational Expressions (Defending oneself)
In this lesson, we will look at how to naturally defend yourself or clear up a misunderstanding in Korean. When someone accuses you or assumes something incorrectly, how do you say "That's not what I meant"?
1. "That's not what I meant."
When your words are taken out of context or misunderstood. - μ λ§μ κ·Έκ² μλλΌ... (What I meant wasn't that, but...) - κ·Έλ° λ»μΌλ‘ ν λ§μ΄ μλμμ. (I didn't say it with that intention.) - μ€ν΄νμ§ λ§μΈμ. (Please don't misunderstand.)
2. "I had no choice." / "It wasn't on purpose."
When you did something, but it wasn't malicious or you were forced into it. - μ΄μ© μ μμμ΄μ. (I had no choice. / It couldn't be helped.) - μΌλΆλ¬ κ·Έλ° κ² μλμμ. (I didn't do it on purpose.) - κ³ μκ° μλμμ΅λλ€. (It wasn't intentional. - Formal)
3. "Let me explain."
When you need a chance to tell your side of the story. - μ λ§ μ’ λκΉμ§ λ€μ΄λ³΄μΈμ. (Please listen to my words until the end.) - λ³λͺ κ°κ² μ§λ§... (It might sound like an excuse, but...) - μν©μ΄ μ΄λ»κ² λ κ±°λλ©΄μ... (To explain how the situation turned out...)
Example Dialogue
A: μ΄μ μ νμμ μ μμ΄μ? μ λ₯Ό 무μνλ 건κ°μ? (Why didn't you come to the meeting yesterday? Are you ignoring me?) B: μ€ν΄νμ§ λ§μΈμ. κ·Έλ° λ»μ΄ μλμμ. μν©μ΄ μ΄λ»κ² λ κ±°λλ©΄μ... κ°μκΈ° μκΈμ€μ κ°κ² λΌμ μ΄μ© μ μμμ΄μ. (Please don't misunderstand. It doesn't mean that. To explain the situation... I suddenly had to go to the emergency room, so I had no choice.) A: μ, κ·Έλ° μ€ λͺ°λλ€μ. (Oh, I didn't know that.)
