Easy Korean - Unit 18: Advanced Situational Expressions (Showing Interest)
Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 18: Advanced Situational Expressions (Showing Interest)
In Korean culture, active listening (리μ‘μ - reactions) is extremely important in conversations. If you just nod silently, the speaker might think you are bored.
In this lesson, we will learn how to show interest and encourage the other person to keep talking!
1. The Power of "κ·Έλμμ?"
When someone is telling a story and pauses, you should prompt them to continue. - κ·Έλμμ? (And then? / So what happened?) - κ·Έλμ μ΄λ»κ² λμ΄μ? (So how did it turn out?)
2. Empathizing Reactions (Listening sounds)
Koreans use a lot of short interjections to show they are following along. - μ~ / μ€~ / μ°μ~ (Ah~ / Oh~ / Wow~) - μ΄λ¨Έ, μ¬μΌμ΄μΌ. (Oh my, what in the world / what a surprise. - Used when hearing gossip or shocking news.) - λ§μμ, λ§μμ. (Right, right.) - κ·Έλ ꡬλ~ / κ·Έλ¬κ²μ. (I see~ / Tell me about it.)
3. Asking for details: "Tell me more!"
When you want the juicy details! - μμΈν μ’ μκΈ°ν΄ λ΄μ. (Tell me about it in detail.) - λ¬΄μ¨ μΌ μμμ΄μ? (Did something happen?) - λ체 μ κ·Έλ° κ±°μμ? (Why on earth did they do that?)
4. Showing Fascination
- λ무 ν₯λ―Έλ‘λ€μ. (That is so interesting/fascinating.)
- κ·κ° μκΉν΄μ§λ μ΄μΌκΈ°λ€μ. (It's a story that makes my ears perk up. -> It's very tempting/interesting.)
Example Dialogue
A: μ μ΄μ κΈΈμμ μ°μ°ν μ λ¨μμΉκ΅¬λ₯Ό λ§λ¬μ΄μ. (I ran into my ex-boyfriend on the street yesterday by chance.) B: μ΄λ¨Έ, μ¬μΌμ΄μΌ! κ·Έλμ μ΄λ»κ² λμ΄μ? (Oh my, what a surprise! So what happened?) A: λμ΄ λ§μ£Όμ³€λλ° λͺ¨λ₯Έ μ²νκ³ μ§λκ°μ΄μ. (We made eye contact, but we pretended not to know each other and passed by.) B: μ§μ§μ? μμΈν μ’ μκΈ°ν΄ λ΄μ. νμ μ΄ μ΄λ μ΄μ? (Really? Tell me in detail. What was his expression like?)
