Easy Korean - Unit 27: Advanced Situational Expressions (Changing the subject)
Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 27: Advanced Situational Expressions (Changing the subject)
In this lesson, we will look at how to naturally change the subject during a conversation. When a topic is getting boring, uncomfortable, or you just remembered something else, you can use these buffer phrases.
1. "By the way..." / "Anyway..."
The most standard ways to pivot a conversation. - κ·Έλμ λ... (Anyway / Be that as it may...) Usage: Very common in spoken Korean to shift from one topic to a completely different one. - κ·Έλ°λ°... / κ·Όλ°... (By the way / But...) - μ무νΌ... / μ΄μ¨λ ... (Anyway / Regardless...)
2. "Speaking of which..."
When the current topic reminds you of something else. - λ§μ΄ λμμ λ§μΈλ°... (Since the words came out -> Speaking of which...) Example: λ§μ΄ λμμ λ§μΈλ°, μ°λ¦¬ μ μ¬ μΈμ λ¨Ήμ΄? (Speaking of which, when are we eating lunch?) - κ·Έλ¬κ³ 보λκΉ... (Now that I look at it / Come to think of it...)
3. "Let's stop talking about this."
When a topic is too heavy, depressing, or repetitive. - μ΄ μκΈ°λ κ·Έλ§ν©μλ€. (Let's stop talking about this.) - λΆμκΈ°λ κΏκΏνλ° λ€λ₯Έ μκΈ° ν κΉμ? (The atmosphere is a bit gloomy, shall we talk about something else?) - μ£Όμ λ₯Ό μ’ λ°κΏ λ³ΌκΉμ? (Shall we change the subject a bit?)
4. Remembering something suddenly
- μ, λ§λ€! (Ah, right!)
- μ°Έ! (Oh, by the way!) Example: μ°Έ! λ μ΄μ λ³΄λΈ μ΄λ©μΌ λ΄€μ΄? (Oh! Did you see the email I sent yesterday?)
Example Dialogue
A: μμ¦ νμ¬ μΌμ΄ λ무 λ§μμ λ§€μΌ μΌκ·Όμ΄μμ. μ λ§ νΌκ³€ν΄μ. (I have so much work at the company lately, I work overtime every day. I'm really tired.) B: μ λμ. μ€νΈλ μ€ λ°μμ λ―ΈμΉκ² μ΄μ. (Me too. I'm going crazy from stress.) A: μ°μΈν μκΈ°λ κ·Έλ§ν κΉμ? κ·Έλμ λ, μ΄λ² μ£Όλ§μ λ ν΄μ? (Shall we stop talking about depressing things? Anyway, what are you doing this weekend?) B: μ£Όλ§μμ? μ§μ μμ κ±°μμ. μ°Έ! λ§μ΄ λμμ λ§μΈλ°, μ£Όλ§μ κ°μ΄ μν λ³Όλμ? (This weekend? I'll be at home. Oh! Speaking of which, do you want to watch a movie together this weekend?)
