Unit 19: Making Verbs into Nouns (-λŠ” 것)

To say things like "my hobby is reading" or "I like eating," we need to turn verbs into nouns. In Easy Korean, the most common way is to use -λŠ” 것.

Structure

Verb Stem + λŠ” 것 (the act of doing...)

  • 보닀 (to see/watch) -> λ³΄λŠ” 것 (watching)
  • λ¨Ήλ‹€ (to eat) -> λ¨ΉλŠ” 것 (eating)
  • λ“£λ‹€ (to listen) -> λ“£λŠ” 것 (listening) Exception: Verbs ending in γ„Ή drop the γ„Ή! (λ§Œλ“€λ‹€ -> λ§Œλ“œλŠ” 것)

How to use it in a sentence

Once it is a noun, you can use it with particles like 은/λŠ” or 을/λ₯Ό!

  • Shortened forms:
  • -λŠ” 것 + 은 = -λŠ” 것은 -> -λŠ” 건 (spoken)
  • -λŠ” 것 + 을 = -λŠ” 것을 -> -λŠ” κ±Έ (spoken)
  • -λŠ” 것 + 이 = -λŠ” 것이 -> -λŠ” 게 (spoken)

Examples

  • 제 μ·¨λ―ΈλŠ” μ˜ν™”λ₯Ό λ³΄λŠ” κ²ƒμ΄μ—μš”. (My hobby is watching movies.)
  • μ €λŠ” 책을 μ½λŠ” 것을 μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”. (I like reading books.) -> μ €λŠ” μ±… μ½λŠ” κ±Έ μ’‹μ•„ν•΄μš”.
