Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 3: Location Words (Front, Back, Side, etc.)
In this unit, we will learn how to describe where things are located. We will use position words and the location particle μ (e) which means "at" or "in".
Basic Position Words
Here are the most common words used to describe locations relative to an object:
- μ (ap) = front
- λ€ (dwi) = back / behind
- μ (yeop) = side / next to
- μ (wi) = top / over / above
- λ° (mit) / μλ (a-rae) = bottom / under / below
- μ (an) = inside
- λ° (bak) = outside
- μ¬μ΄ (sa-i) = between
How to use them
To say that something is in a specific position relative to a noun, you use this structure: Noun + Position Word + μ
- μ± μ μ (chaek-sang wi) = top of the desk
-
μ± μ μμ (chaek-sang wi-e) = on top of the desk
-
μ§ μ (jip ap) = front of the house
- μ§ μμ (jip a-pe) = in front of the house
Describing where something is
We usually combine these location phrases with the verbs μλ€ (to be/exist) and μλ€ (to not be/not exist).
- μνμ νκ΅ μμ μμ΄μ. (The bank is next to the school.)
- κ³ μμ΄κ° μμ λ°μ μμ΄μ. (The cat is under the chair.)
- κ°λ°© μμ μ§κ°μ΄ μμ΄μ. (The wallet is not inside the bag.)
"Between" (μ¬μ΄)
When using μ¬μ΄ (between), you usually need two nouns. You connect them with νκ³ or (μ΄)λ, meaning "and."
Noun 1 + νκ³ /λ + Noun 2 + μ¬μ΄μ
- μ½κ΅μ λ³μνκ³ μν μ¬μ΄μ μμ΄μ. (The pharmacy is between the hospital and the bank.)
