Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 5: Approximate Time (About, Around)
When you want to say "about", "around", or "approximately" in relation to time, quantity, or age, Korean has three common words you can use: μ―€ (jjeum), μ λ (jeong-do), and μ½ (yak).
1. μ―€ (jjeum) - About / Around
μ―€ is a suffix, meaning it attaches directly to the end of a noun (like time, price, age) without a space. It is the most common and casual way to say "about."
- ν μ (1 o'clock) + μ―€ = ν μμ―€ (around 1 o'clock)
- μ² μ (1,000 won) + μ―€ = μ² μμ―€ (about 1,000 won)
- λ΄μΌ (tomorrow) + μ―€ = λ΄μΌμ―€ (around tomorrow)
Example: λ΄μΌ λ μμ―€ λ§λ κΉμ? (Shall we meet around 2 o'clock tomorrow?)
2. μ λ (jeong-do) - About / Approximately
μ λ is a standalone noun that means "degree" or "extent." It functions similarly to μ―€ but is used with a space after the noun. It often sounds slightly more formal or exact than μ―€.
- ν λ¬ (one month) + μ λ = ν λ¬ μ λ (about one month)
- 5λΆ (5 minutes) + μ λ = 5λΆ μ λ (about 5 minutes)
Example: νκ΅μμ 1λ μ λ μ΄μμ΄μ. (I lived in Korea for about a year.)
3. μ½ (yak) - Approximately / About
μ½ is placed before the noun. It means "approximately" and is often used together with μ―€ or μ λ to emphasize the estimation.
- μ½ + ν μκ° = μ½ ν μκ° (about one hour)
- μ½ + λ§ μ = μ½ λ§ μ (about 10,000 won)
You can combine them like this: * μ½ ν μκ° μ―€ (approximately around one hour) * μ½ ν μκ° μ λ (approximately about one hour)
