Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 8: To look like, to seem like (Noun + κ°λ€)
In this unit, we will learn how to say something is "like" something else, or "seems like" a noun.
The Verb: κ°λ€ (gat-da)
κ°λ€ means "to be the same" or "to be alike." In everyday polite conversation, it is conjugated as κ°μμ (ga-ta-yo).
- Aμ Bλ κ°μμ. = A and B are the same.
- μ΄κ±°λ μ κ±°λ κ°μμ? = Are this and that the same?
Noun + κ°λ€ (To be like / to look like)
If you attach κ°λ€ directly to a noun, it means it looks like or seems like that noun. However, to sound completely natural in Korean, we usually add the particle μ΄λ/λ (with/and) or νκ³ (with/and) before κ°μμ.
Structure: Noun + (μ΄)λ + κ°μμ / Noun + νκ³ + κ°μμ (Literally: "It is the same with [Noun]")
- κ±°μ§λ§ κ°μμ. (It seems like a lie.) -> Often used without particles for fixed phrases.
- μ΄ μ¬λμ μ²μ¬ κ°μμ. (This person is like an angel. / looks like an angel.)
Let's look at more natural phrasing: * κ·Έ κ°μμ§λ κ³° κ°μμ. (That puppy looks like a bear.) * μ΄ λ¬Όμ μΌμ κ°μμ. (This water is like ice - very cold.)
Noun + μ²λΌ / κ°μ΄ (Like / As)
When you want to use "like" as an adverb to describe how an action is done, you use μ²λΌ (cheo-reom) or κ°μ΄ (ga-chi) attached to a noun. They both mean "like" or "as."
Structure: Noun + μ²λΌ / Noun + κ°μ΄ + Verb/Adjective
- μμ²λΌ λ κ³ μΆμ΄μ. (I want to fly like a bird.)
- μνλ°°μ°μ²λΌ μμκ²Όμ΄μ. (He is handsome like a movie actor.)
- νκ΅ μ¬λκ°μ΄ νκ΅μ΄λ₯Ό μν΄μ. (He speaks Korean well like a Korean person.)
