Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 10: Before -ing (-κΈ° μ μ)
Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 10: Before -ing (-κΈ° μ μ)
In this unit, we will learn how to say "before doing something."
The word for "before" in Korean is μ (jeon). When used with a location particle, it becomes μ μ (jeon-e), meaning "before (a certain time or action)."
1. Noun + μ μ (Before a Noun)
When you want to say "before a noun" (like before a meal, before class, before 3 o'clock), you simply attach μ μ directly to the noun.
- μμ (class) + μ μ = μμ μ μ (before class)
- μμ¬ (meal) + μ μ = μμ¬ μ μ (before a meal)
- 1λ (1 year) + μ μ = 1λ μ μ (1 year ago / before 1 year)
2. Verb + -κΈ° μ μ (Before doing something)
When you want to use a verb, you cannot just attach μ μ. You have to turn the verb into a noun form first. You do this by attaching -κΈ° (-gi) to the verb stem.
Structure: Verb Stem + -κΈ° μ μ
- κ°λ€ (to go) -> κ° + κΈ° μ μ = κ°κΈ° μ μ (before going)
- λ¨Ήλ€ (to eat) -> λ¨Ή + κΈ° μ μ = λ¨ΉκΈ° μ μ (before eating)
- μλ€ (to sleep) -> μ + κΈ° μ μ = μκΈ° μ μ (before sleeping)
Tense
Just like with other conjunctions, the tense is usually placed on the final verb of the sentence, not on the verb before -κΈ° μ μ.
- νκ΅μ μ€κΈ° μ μ νκ΅μ΄λ₯Ό 곡λΆνμ΄μ. (Before I came to Korea, I studied Korean.) (Not μκΈ° μ μ. Just use the stem μ€-)
