Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 11: The γ (B) Irregular
In Korean, some verbs and adjectives that end with the consonant γ (bieup) change their form when followed by a suffix starting with a vowel. We call this the "γ Irregular."
The Rule
When a verb or adjective stem ends in γ AND is followed by a vowel (like -μ/μ΄/μ¬, -(μΌ)λ©΄, -(μΌ)λκΉ): 1. Remove the γ from the stem. 2. Add μ° (u). (Note: For λλ€ (to help) and κ³±λ€ (to be beautiful), you add μ€ (o) instead of μ°. These are the only two exceptions.)
Examples with -μ/μ΄μ (Present Tense)
Most γ irregulars will end up taking -μ΄μ because we added 'μ°' (which is not μ or μ€).
-
μΆ₯λ€ (to be cold) μΆ₯ -> μΆ + μ° -> μΆμ° + μ΄μ = μΆμμ
-
λ₯λ€ (to be hot) λ₯ -> λ + μ° -> λμ° + μ΄μ = λμμ
-
μ΄λ ΅λ€ (to be difficult) μ΄λ ΅ -> μ΄λ € + μ° -> μ΄λ €μ° + μ΄μ = μ΄λ €μμ
-
μ½λ€ (to be easy) μ½ -> μ¬ + μ° -> μ¬μ° + μ΄μ = μ¬μμ
-
λ§΅λ€ (to be spicy) 맡 -> 맀 + μ° -> λ§€μ° + μ΄μ = 맀μμ
The Exceptions
1. λλ€ (to help) & κ³±λ€ (to be beautiful) As mentioned, these take 'μ€'. * λλ€ -> λ + μ€ + μμ = λμμ
2. Regular γ Words (They do not change!) Not all words ending in γ are irregular. Some words follow regular conjugation rules. You just have to memorize these common ones: * μ λ€ (to wear) -> μ μ΄μ * μ‘λ€ (to catch) -> μ‘μμ * μ’λ€ (to be narrow) -> μ’μμ
Example Sentences

- μ΄ νκ΅μ΄ μ± μ μ‘°κΈ μ΄λ €μμ. (This Korean book is a bit difficult.)
