Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 13: Making Adjectives (Noun Modifiers) -(μΌ)γ΄
In Korean, "adjectives" like ν¬λ€ (to be big) or μμλ€ (to be pretty) actually function more like descriptive verbs. They are conjugated at the end of sentences (e.g., κ°λ°©μ΄ ν½λλ€ / κ°λ°©μ΄ 컀μ).
But what if you want to say "a big bag" or "a pretty flower"? You have to change the adjective into a modifying form that comes before the noun.
The Rule: -(μΌ)γ΄
To change a descriptive verb (adjective) into a noun modifier, you add -(μΌ)γ΄ to the stem.
1. Stem ends in a VOWEL: Add -γ΄ * ν¬λ€ (big) -> ν¬ + γ΄ = ν° (big) * ν° κ°λ°© = a big bag * μμλ€ (pretty) -> μμ + γ΄ = μμ (pretty) * μμ κ½ = a pretty flower * λΉμΈλ€ (expensive) -> λΉμΈ + γ΄ = λΉμΌ (expensive) * λΉμΌ μ°¨ = an expensive car
2. Stem ends in a CONSONANT: Add -μ * μλ€ (small) -> μ + μ = μμ (small) * μμ λ°© = a small room * μ’λ€ (good) -> μ’ + μ = μ’μ (good) * μ’μ μ¬λ = a good person
3. Irregulars! * γ Irregular: Drop γ , add μ΄. * μΆ₯λ€ (cold) -> μΆμ΄ λ μ¨ (cold weather) * μ΄λ ΅λ€ (difficult) -> μ΄λ €μ΄ μν (difficult test) * μλ€/μλ€: If the adjective ends in -μλ€ or -μλ€ (like λ§μλ€ or μ¬λ―Έμλ€), you add -λ instead of -(μΌ)γ΄. * λ§μλ€ (delicious) -> λ§μλ μμ (delicious food) * μ¬λ―Έμλ€ (boring) -> μ¬λ―Έμλ μν (boring movie)
