Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 16: Let's do it!
In Korean, the way you say "Let's..." depends entirely on who you are talking to. There are three main ways to make a suggestion.
1. Polite & Natural: -μ/μ΄/μ¬μ
The most common way to say "Let's" in everyday polite conversation is actually just the standard present tense ending -μ/μ΄/μ¬μ. You distinguish it from a normal statement by your tone of voice and context (and often by adding "μ°λ¦¬" - we/us).
- μμν΄μ. (We are starting. OR Let's start.)
- λ΄μΌ λ§λμ. (We meet tomorrow. OR Let's meet tomorrow.)
- μ°λ¦¬ κ°μ΄ λ°₯ λ¨Ήμ΄μ. (Let's eat together.)
2. Formal: -(μΌ)γ μλ€
When you are in a formal setting, giving a presentation, or speaking to a group, you use -(μΌ)γ μλ€. Note: Do NOT use this with older people or your boss, as it can sound bossy or overly commanding. Use -μ/μ΄/μ¬μ instead.
- Vowel stem: Add -γ
μλ€
- κ°λ€ -> κ°μλ€ (Let's go.)
- Consonant stem: Add -μμλ€
- λ¨Ήλ€ -> λ¨Ήμμλ€ (Let's eat.)
3. Casual / Intimate: -μ
When you are speaking to close friends, people younger than you, or in "λ°λ§" (casual speech), you attach -μ to the verb stem.
- κ°λ€ -> κ°μ (Let's go!)
- νλ€ -> νμ (Let's do it!)
- λ¨Ήλ€ -> λ¨Ήμ (Let's eat!)
Summary Example: "Let's go"
- κ°μ (Polite / Normal)
- κ°μλ€ (Formal / Group setting)
- κ°μ (Casual / Friends only)
