Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 18: Nothing but, Only (λ°μ)
Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 18: Nothing but, Only (λ°μ)
In Korean, there are two main ways to say "only." The first is λ§ (man), which you learned earlier (e.g., μ΄κ²λ§ μ£ΌμΈμ = Give me only this).
In this unit, we will learn the second way: λ°μ (bak-ke).
How is λ°μ different from λ§?
- λ°μ literally means "outside of."
- Therefore, it MUST be followed by a negative verb (like μλ€, μ, λͺ», μ§ μλ€).
-
It gives a nuance of disappointment, lack, or that something is "not enough."
-
μ¬κ³Όκ° νλλ§ μμ΄μ. (There is only one apple. - Neutral fact)
- μ¬κ³Όκ° νλλ°μ μμ΄μ. (There is nothing but one apple. / I only have one apple [and that's not enough].)
Structure: Noun + λ°μ + Negative Verb
- λ (money) -> λλ°μ μμ΄μ. (I have nothing but money / I only have money.)
- νκ΅μ΄ (Korean) -> νκ΅μ΄λ°μ λͺ°λΌμ. (I don't know anything outside of Korean / I only know Korean.)
- ν λͺ (one person) -> ν λͺ λ°μ μ μμ΄μ. (No one came except one person / Only one person came.)
Common Negative Verbs used with λ°μ
- μλ€ (to not exist / not have)
- λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€ (to not know)
- μ / -μ§ μλ€ (do not)
- λͺ» / -μ§ λͺ»νλ€ (cannot)
Exceptions
You cannot use λ°μ with imperative (do this) or propositive (let's do this) sentences. In those cases, you must use λ§. * μ΄κ²λ°μ λ³΄μ§ λ§μΈμ. (WRONG) -> μ΄κ²λ§ 보μΈμ. (RIGHT - Please look only at this.)
