Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 23: The ๋ฅด (Reu) Irregular
In Unit 11, we learned about the ใ irregular. Now we will learn another very common irregular rule: the ๋ฅด (Reu) irregular.
The Rule
When a verb or adjective stem ends in ๋ฅด (like ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋ค, ๋น ๋ฅด๋ค) AND it meets a suffix that starts with a vowel (like -์/์ด์), the following happens:
- The vowel ใ ก in '๋ฅด' is dropped.
- An extra ใน is added to the bottom of the previous syllable.
- The remaining 'ใน' attaches to the new vowel (-์ or -์ด, depending on the vowel of the previous syllable).
It sounds complicated, but it's very consistent! Let's look at examples.
Examples
1. ๋น ๋ฅด๋ค (to be fast) * Stem: ๋น ๋ฅด * Meets: -์์ (because '๋น ' has the '์' vowel) * Rule: Drop ใ ก. Add ใน to ๋น -> ๋นจ. Add ใน to ์์ -> ๋ผ์. * Result: ๋นจ๋ผ์ (It is fast)
2. ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋ค (to not know) * Stem: ๋ชจ๋ฅด * Meets: -์์ (because '๋ชจ' has the '์ค' vowel) * Rule: Drop ใ ก. Add ใน to ๋ชจ -> ๋ชฐ. Add ใน to ์์ -> ๋ผ์. * Result: ๋ชฐ๋ผ์ (I don't know)
3. ๋ถ๋ฅด๋ค (to sing / to call / to be full) * Stem: ๋ถ๋ฅด * Meets: -์ด์ (because '๋ถ' has the '์ฐ' vowel) * Rule: Drop ใ ก. Add ใน to ๋ถ -> ๋ถ. Add ใน to ์ด์ -> ๋ฌ์. * Result: ๋ถ๋ฌ์ (I sing / I am full)
4. ์๋ฅด๋ค (to cut) * Stem: ์๋ฅด * Meets: -์์ -> ์๋ผ์ (I cut it)
5. ๊ฒ์ผ๋ฅด๋ค (to be lazy) * Stem: ๊ฒ์ผ๋ฅด * Meets: -์ด์ -> ๊ฒ์๋ฌ์ (They are lazy)
What if the suffix is NOT a vowel?
If the suffix starts with a consonant (like -๊ณ , -๋, -(์ผ)๋ฉด, etc.), the word stays completely regular!
- ๋น ๋ฅด๋ค -> ๋น ๋ฅด๊ณ , ๋น ๋ฅด๋ฉด, ๋น ๋ฅด์ง๋ง
- ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋ค -> ๋ชจ๋ฅด๊ณ , ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋ฉด, ๋ชจ๋ฅด์ง๋ง
