Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 25: The γ„· (D) Irregular

In this unit, we will learn about verbs whose stems end in the consonant γ„· (digeut). Some of these verbs are irregular and change their form.

The Rule

When an irregular verb stem ending in γ„· is followed by a suffix starting with a vowel (like -μ•„/μ–΄μš”, -(으)λ©΄, -(으)λ‹ˆκΉŒ): The γ„· changes to γ„Ή (rieul).

  • λ“£λ‹€ (to listen) λ“£ + μ–΄μš” -> λ“€μ–΄μš” λ“£ + μ•˜μ–΄μš” -> λ“€μ—ˆμ–΄μš” (past tense) λ“£ + 을 κ±°μ˜ˆμš” -> 듀을 κ±°μ˜ˆμš” (future tense)

  • κ±·λ‹€ (to walk) κ±· + μ–΄μš” -> κ±Έμ–΄μš” κ±· + μ•˜μ–΄μš” -> κ±Έμ—ˆμ–΄μš” κ±· + μ„κΉŒμš”? -> κ±Έμ„κΉŒμš”? (shall we walk?)

  • 묻닀 (to ask) 묻 + μ–΄μš” -> λ¬Όμ–΄μš” (I ask) / λ¬Όμ–΄λ³΄μ„Έμš” (Please ask)

What if the suffix starts with a consonant?

If the suffix starts with a consonant (like -κ³ , -λŠ”, -μ§€λ§Œ), the γ„· does NOT change.

  • λ“£λ‹€ -> λ“£κ³  (listen and...), λ“£λŠ” (listening...)
  • κ±·λ‹€ -> κ±·κ³  (walk and...), κ±·λŠ” (walking...)

Regular γ„· Verbs (Exceptions)

Some very common verbs ending in γ„· are completely regular. The γ„· never changes to γ„Ή. You just have to memorize them! * λ°›λ‹€ (to receive): λ°›μ•„μš”, λ°›μ•˜μ–΄μš”, 받을 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”. * λ‹«λ‹€ (to close): λ‹«μ•„μš”, λ‹«μ•˜μ–΄μš”, 닫을 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”. * λ―Ώλ‹€ (to believe): λ―Ώμ–΄μš”, λ―Ώμ—ˆμ–΄μš”, 믿을 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”.
