Easy Korean - Unit 17: Future tense / -(으)ㄹ게요 vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Easy Korean Level 4 - Unit 17: Future tense / -(으)ㄹ게요 vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Korean has several ways to talk about the future. The two most common forms are -(으)ㄹ 거예요 and -(으)ㄹ게요. While they both mean "will," there is a big difference in nuance!
1. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 (General Future / Plan)
We learned this in Level 2. It simply states a fact about the future or a plan you have. - 내일 친구를 만날 거예요. (I will meet a friend tomorrow.) - 저는 내일 바쁠 거예요. (I will be busy tomorrow.) - Usage: Can be used for "I", "You", "He/She", "They."
2. -(으)ㄹ게요 (Promising / Reacting to the listener)
-(으)ㄹ게요 is used when your future action is a promise to the listener, or is a reaction to what the listener just said. It means "I will do it (for you/since you said that)."
- Condition 1: The subject MUST be "I" or "We". (You cannot say "He will go" using -ㄹ게요.)
- Condition 2: It must be an action verb. (You cannot use it with adjectives like "I will be busy.")
Examples of the Difference
Situation A: You are studying, and the room is cold. Someone says, "It's cold." - You respond: 제가 창문을 닫을게요. (I will close the window - Reaction to the listener's comment, offering to do it.)
Situation B: You are writing your schedule in your diary. - You write: 내일은 청소를 할 거예요. (Tomorrow I will clean - Just stating your plan.)
Making a promise: - 내일 다시 전화할게요! (I'll call you again tomorrow! - A promise.) - 늦어서 죄송해요. 내일은 일찍 올게요. (Sorry for being late. I will come early tomorrow. - A promise.)
