Unit 22: Instead Of (-(으)ㄴ/는 대신에)

To say "instead of" doing something or "in return for" something, we use 대신에 in Easy Korean.

Structure

1. With Nouns: Noun + 대신(에)
2. 밥 대신에 빵을 먹었어요. (I ate bread instead of rice.)
3. With Verbs: Verb Stem + -는 대신(에)
4. 영화를 보는 대신에 책을 읽었어요. (Instead of watching a movie, I read a book.)
5. With Adjectives: Adjective Stem + -(으)ㄴ 대신(에)
6. 이 가방은 작은 대신에 아주 가벼워요. (This bag is small, but instead/in return, it is very light.)

Note: You can drop the '에' and just say '대신'.

Examples

• 제가 요리하는 대신에 설거지를 해 주세요. (I will cook, so in return, please do the dishes.)
• 커피 대신 차를 마실게요. (I will drink tea instead of coffee.)
