Easy Korean - Level 6, Unit 29: Compared to... (-에 비해서 / -에 비하면)

When you want to compare two nouns (like people, objects, or situations), you use the expression -에 비해서 or -에 비하면, which means "compared to."

Structure Breakdown

  • -에 = to / at
  • 비하다 = to compare
  • -아/어서 = and / so
  • -(으)면 = if

So, [Noun] + 에 비해서 means "Compared to [Noun]." [Noun] + 에 비하면 means "If you compare it to [Noun]." They are interchangeable!

How to Conjugate

Just attach -에 비해서 (or -에 비하면) directly to the noun you are using as the standard of comparison.

  • 작년 (last year) -> 작년에 비해서 (compared to last year)
  • 우리 회사 (our company) -> 우리 회사에 비해서 (compared to our company)
  • 다른 사람 (other people) -> 다른 사람에 비해서 (compared to other people)

Often used with -ㄴ/은 편이다

Koreans often pair this grammar point with -ㄴ/은/는 편이다 (It tends to be... / It's on the ___ side) rather than making an absolute statement.

  • 저 식당은 가격에 비해서 맛있는 편이에요. (Compared to the price, that restaurant is on the delicious side.)
