Unit 13: Not Only... But Also (-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라)

To express "not only A, but also B," you use -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 in Easy Korean.

Structure

Verb / Adjective Stem + -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 (For nouns: Noun + 뿐만 아니라)

  1. Vowel: -ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 (크다 -> 클 뿐만 아니라 - not only big, but also)
  2. Consonant: -을 뿐만 아니라 (맛있다 -> 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 - not only delicious, but also)

Usage Rule

If the first clause is positive, the second clause MUST be positive. If the first is negative, the second must be negative. You are compounding things in the same direction!

Examples

  • 이 식당은 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 가격도 싸요. (This restaurant is not only delicious, but the price is also cheap.)
  • 그 사람은 잘생겼을 뿐만 아니라 성격도 좋아요. (That person is not only handsome, but also has a good personality. - Past stem + 을 뿐만 아니라)
  • 저는 학생일 뿐만 아니라 회사원이에요. (I am not only a student, but also an office worker. - Noun + 일 뿐만 아니라)
