Level 8 Unit 01: Escalation, Proportion & Inescapable Conditions (-(으)ㄹ수록, -에 비례하여, -는 이상)

At Level 8, you transition from basic conditional logic to formulating proportional trajectories, cumulative growth, and non-negotiable situational premises.

1. -(으)면 -(으)ㄹ수록 / -(으)ㄹ수록 (The More... The More...)

Expresses that as the degree or intensity of action A increases, action B intensifies proportionally.

Structure:

[Verb/Adj Stem] + -(으)면 + [Verb/Adj Stem] + -(으)ㄹ수록 + [Escalating Result]
(The -(으)면 part is frequently omitted for brevity: 갈수록, 보면 볼수록)

Examples:

  • 한국어는 공부를 하면 할수록 그 깊이에 매료된다.
    (The more you study Korean, the more captivated you become by its depth.)
  • 날씨가 추울수록 몸을 더 자주 움직여야 면역력이 유지된다.
    (The colder the weather gets, the more frequently one must move to maintain immunity.)
  • 이 책은 읽을수록 새로운 깨달음을 준다.
    (This book gives new realizations the more one reads it.)

2. -에 비례하여 / -에 상응하여 (In Proportion To / In Accordance With)

High formal, economic, and academic register indicating strict mathematical or logical proportionality.

Examples:

  • 노동 시간의 증가에 비례하여 피로도 역시 급격히 상승한다.
    (In proportion to the increase in labor hours, fatigue levels also rise sharply.)
  • 투자한 노력과 시간에 상응하는 성과를 거둘 수 있을 것이다.
    (We will be able to achieve results commensurate with the effort and time invested.)

3. -(으)ㄴ/는 이상 (As Long As / Since It Has Already Come to This)

Establishes a non-negotiable premise: "Since situation A is already an established reality, outcome or duty B is inevitable."

Structure:

  • Action Verb (Present): -는 이상
  • Action Verb (Past): -(으)ㄴ 이상
  • Descriptive Verb (Adj): -(으)ㄴ 이상
  • Noun: 인 이상

Examples:

  • 계약서에 서명한 이상, 조건을 번복할 수는 없습니다.
    (Since you have already signed the contract, you cannot retract the terms.)
  • 팀의 리더인 이상, 이번 결과에 대해 끝까지 책임을 져야 한다.
    (As long as you are the leader of the team, you must take full responsibility for this result.)
  • 시작한 이상, 중도에 포기하지 않고 끝까지 해낼 것이다.
    (Now that we have started, I will see it through to the end without giving up halfway.)

4. -는 한 (As Long As... / Within the Boundary Of...)

Expresses scope and limitation: - 내가 아는 한, 그는 결코 거짓말을 할 사람이 아니다.
(As far as I know, he is never a person to tell lies.) - 최선을 다하는 한, 후회는 남지 않을 것이다.
(As long as you do your best, no regret will remain.)

5. Conversational Immersion

현우: 이번 프로젝트가 생각보다 규모가 커져서 부담스럽네요.
민경: 맞아요. 하지만 이미 시작한 이상 물러설 수는 없잖아요.
현우: 그렇죠. 준비를 철저히 하면 할수록 성공 확률도 높아질 테니까요.
민경: 네, 우리가 노력하는 한 반드시 좋은 결과가 있을 거예요!
