In high-level Korean, causal connectors reflect fine gradations of external chaos, psychological irritation, personal blame, and indignant rhetorical questions.

1. -는 통에 (Chaotic External Disruption)

Used when a bustling, noisy, hectic, or disordered external situation directly prevents you from accomplishing something or causes confusion.

Structure:

[Chaotic Action/Disturbance] + -는 통에 + [Disrupted Negative Outcome]

Examples:

• 옆집에서 밤새 공사를 하는 통에 한숨도 못 잤어요.
  (Because of the next-door construction going on all night, I couldn't sleep a single wink.)
• 아이들이 거실에서 시끄럽게 떠드는 통에 중요한 전화를 제대로 받지 못했다.
  (Due to the kids making so much noise in the living room, I couldn't take the important call properly.)
• 출근길 지하철에 사람이 너무 몰리는 통에 가방 끈이 끊어질 뻔했다.
  (Because of people rushing in chaos onto the morning subway, my bag strap almost snapped.)

2. -기로서니 (Indignant Rhetorical Protest / "Even if... How could you...?")

Expresses indignation or reproach: "Even granting that A is true, how on earth could you do B?"

Structure:

[Conceded Premise] + -기로서니 + [Rhetorical Question / Admonition (어찌/어떻게...)]

Examples:

• 아무리 화가 나기로서니 어른에게 소리를 지르면 되니?
  (Even if you are angry, how could you yell at an elder like that?)
• 아무리 바쁘기로서니 전화 한 통 남길 시간도 없었단 말인가?
  (Even granting that you were busy, did you not even have time to leave a single phone call?)
• 가격이 저렴하기로서니 품질이 이렇게 형편없어서야 되겠습니까?
  (Even though the price is low, is it acceptable for the quality to be this terrible?)
