Unit 4: As, In Accordance With (-(으)ㅁ에 따라)

When describing a situation where as one thing changes, another thing changes accordingly, we use -(으)ㅁ에 따라(서) in Easy Korean. It is a very formal, written expression commonly found in news or reports.

Structure

Verb Stem + -(으)ㅁ에 따라(서)

You turn the verb into a formal noun using -(으)ㅁ, then attach 에 따라(서). 1. Vowel: -ㅁ에 따라 (증가하다 -> 증가함에 따라 - As it increases) 2. Consonant: -음에 따라 (많아지다 -> 많아짐에 따라 - As it becomes a lot)

Examples

• 경제가 발전함에 따라 생활 수준도 높아졌습니다. (As the economy developed, the standard of living also rose.)
• 인터넷이 발달함에 따라서 세상이 많이 변했어요. (As the internet developed, the world changed a lot.)
• 나이가 듦에 따라 건강의 중요성을 깨닫게 됩니다. (As one ages, one realizes the importance of health. 들다 drops ㄹ, adds ㅁ -> 듦)
