Easy Korean - Level 9, Unit 3: Even... (μ‘°μ°¨)
We already know that the particle -λ means "also" or "even" (e.g., λλ = me too / even me). In advanced Korean, when we want to say "even" to express an extreme, unexpected, or negative situation, we use the particle μ‘°μ°¨ (jo-cha).
How to use μ‘°μ°¨
μ‘°μ°¨ attaches directly to a noun. It replaces subject or object markers (μ΄/κ°, μ/λ₯Ό).
- μ΄λ¦ (name) -> μ΄λ¦μ‘°μ°¨ (Even the name)
- κ°μ‘± (family) -> κ°μ‘±μ‘°μ°¨ (Even my family)
- λ (you) -> λμ‘°μ°¨ (Even you)
The Nuance of μ‘°μ°¨
μ‘°μ°¨ implies: "Out of all things, even the most basic or unexpected one..." Because it emphasizes a worst-case scenario or a complete lack of something, it is almost ALWAYS followed by a negative sentence (λͺ»νλ€, μλ€, μ νλ€, λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€).
- Positive: μ μλλ κ·Έ λ¬Έμ λ₯Ό νμμ΄μ. (Even the teacher solved that problem. -> Use -λ).
- Negative: μ μλμ‘°μ°¨ κ·Έ λ¬Έμ λ₯Ό λͺ» νμμ΄μ. (Even the teacher couldn't solve that problem. -> Use μ‘°μ°¨).
