Easy Korean - Level 9, Unit 12: As you know / As you can see (-λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό)

When you are stating something that the listener is already aware of, or something they can clearly see with their own eyes, you use the structure -λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό.

It translates to "As you can see," "As you know," or "As you are aware."

Structure Breakdown

  • -λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό = as / just as (doing)

It is usually attached to sensory verbs (to see, to hear, to feel) or verbs related to knowledge (to know, to guess).

How to Conjugate

Just attach -λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό to the verb stem.

  • 보닀 (to see) -> λ³΄λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό (As you can see)
  • μ•„μ‹œλ‹€ (to know - honorific) -> μ•„μ‹œλ‹€μ‹œν”Ό (As you know)
  • λ“€μœΌμ‹œλ‹€ (to hear - honorific) -> λ“€μœΌμ‹œλ‹€μ‹œν”Ό (As you hear/heard)
  • μ§μž‘ν•˜μ‹œλ‹€ (to guess - honorific) -> μ§μž‘ν•˜μ‹œλ‹€μ‹œν”Ό (As you might guess)

Note: We almost always use the honorific infix '-μ‹œ-' with verbs like μ•Œλ‹€ or λ“£λ‹€ because we are referring to the listener's knowledge or action.

-λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό ν•˜λ‹€ (To practically do something)

There is a second, slightly different usage. If you say [Action]-λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό ν•˜λ‹€, it means "I practically [Action]" or "I am doing something to the point that it is basically [Action]."

  • μš”μ¦˜ λ„ˆλ¬΄ λ°”λΉ μ„œ νšŒμ‚¬μ—μ„œ μ‚΄λ‹€μ‹œν”Ό ν•΄μš”. (I am so busy these days that I practically live at the company.)
  • 맀일 κ΅Άλ‹€μ‹œν”Ό ν•˜κ³  μΌν–ˆμ–΄μš”. (I worked while practically starving every day.)
