Workbook: Unit 16 - Location Markers

Practice choosing between 에 and μ—μ„œ!

Exercise 1: 에 vs μ—μ„œ

Look at the verb at the end of the sentence. Does it describe existence/direction, or an active action? Choose the correct particle.

  1. ν•œκ΅(Korea) [ 에 / μ—μ„œ ] μ‚΄μ•„μš” (live). (Hint: "living" is technically an action, but in Korean, μ‚΄λ‹€ can take either! For this exercise, let's look at a clearer one:) Let's replace: ν•œκ΅(Korea) [ 에 / μ—μ„œ ] μžˆμ–΄μš” (exist).

  2. 곡원(Park) [ 에 / μ—μ„œ ] λ†€μ•„μš” (play).

  3. 학ꡐ(School) [ 에 / μ—μ„œ ] κ°€μš” (go).

  4. 집(Home) [ 에 / μ—μ„œ ] μžμš” (sleep).

Exercise 2: Translation Practice

Translate the following sentences into Korean.

Vocabulary: * 집 (jip) = home * νšŒμ‚¬ (hoe-sa) = company / office * μΌν•˜λ‹€ (il-ha-da) = to work

  1. I am at home. (Existence)
  2. I work at the office. (Action)
  3. I went to the office. (Direction - Past tense)

(jip-e i-sseo-yo) 2. νšŒμ‚¬μ—μ„œ μΌν•΄μš”. (hoe-sa-e-seo il-hae-yo) 3. νšŒμ‚¬μ— κ°”μ–΄μš”. (hoe-sa-e ga-sseo-yo) **Exercise 3:** Correct Sentence: λ„μ„œκ΄€μ—μ„œ κ³΅λΆ€ν•΄μš”. Reason: κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λ‹€ (to study) is an active action verb, so you must use the action location marker μ—μ„œ, not the existence marker 에.
