Unit 9: Please give me (주세요)

When you travel to Korea or go to a Korean restaurant, you will want to order things. The most polite and common way to ask for something is to use the word 주세요.

1. 주세요 (ju-se-yo) = Please give me

주세요 comes from the verb 주다 (to give). By adding (으)세요, it becomes a polite request: "Please give me..."

To use it, you simply say the noun you want, followed by 주세요.

  • Noun + 주세요 = Please give me + [Noun]

Grammar note: You can use the object particle (을/를) after the noun, but in everyday spoken Korean, it is very often dropped.

2. Examples in Context

Scenario 1: At a restaurant A: 뭘 드릴까요? (What can I get for you?) B: 김치 주세요. (Please give me some kimchi.)

Scenario 2: At a cafe A: 주문하시겠어요? (Would you like to order?) B: 커피 주세요. (Please give me coffee.)

3. Combining with "이거/그거/저거"

If you don't know the name of something on a menu, or if you are shopping and want to point at an item, you can use the words we learned in Unit 7!

  • 이거 주세요. (Please give me this.)
  • 그거 주세요. (Please give me that.)
  • 저거 주세요. (Please give me that one over there.)

4. Asking for multiple things

If you want to ask for A and B, you can use the word 하고 (ha-go), which means "and" when linking nouns.

  • 커피 하고 케이크 주세요. = Please give me coffee and cake.
  • 밥 하고 김치 주세요. = Please give me rice and kimchi.

Summary

  • 주세요 = Please give me
  • Point and say: 이거 주세요 = Please give me this one.
  • Link nouns: A 하고 B 주세요 = Please give me A and B.
