Unit 6: But, However (그렇지만, 그런데)¶
To express contrast in Easy Korean, we can connect two sentences using words meaning "but" or "however."
1. 그렇지만¶
그렇지만 strongly means "but" or "however." It is often used to present a direct contrast or opposite fact.
- 한국어는 어려워요. 그렇지만 재미있어요. (Korean is difficult. But it is fun.)
2. 그런데¶
그런데 also means "but," but it is softer and more versatile. It can mean "but," "and by the way," or "so anyway," often used to transition to a new but related topic or introduce a slightly contrasting background detail.
- 어제 피자를 샀어요. 그런데 안 먹었어요. (I bought pizza yesterday. But I didn't eat it.)
Difference?¶
In everyday conversation, 그런데 is used much more frequently because it naturally bridges two thoughts without being aggressively contrasting.
