Unit 16: Before doing (-기 전에)

In Easy Korean, if you want to say you do something "before" doing another action, you use -기 전에.

1. With Nouns

For nouns, simply add 전에 (before). - 식사 (meal) -> 식사 전에 (before the meal) - 수업 (class) -> 수업 전에 (before class)

2. With Verbs

For verbs, you first have to turn the verb into a noun form by adding -기, and then add 전에. Rule: Verb Stem + 기 전에

  • 가다 (to go) -> 가 + 기 전에 = 가기 전에 (before going)
  • 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹 + 기 전에 = 먹기 전에 (before eating)
  • 자다 (to sleep) -> 자 + 기 전에 = 자기 전에 (before sleeping)

Examples

  • 밥을 먹기 전에 손을 씻어요. (Before eating, I wash my hands.)
  • 한국에 가기 전에 한국어를 공부했어요. (Before going to Korea, I studied Korean.)
