Unit 7: Quoting Verbs (-ㄴ/는다고 하다)¶
Now let's learn how to quote Action Verbs in Easy Korean. "Someone said they do [action]..."
Structure¶
Verb Stem + -ㄴ/는다고 하다 (or -ㄴ/는다고 했어요 for "said")
This is slightly different from adjectives! You have to add -ㄴ/는. 1. Verb stem ending in a vowel: Add -ㄴ다고 하다 - 가다 -> 가 + ㄴ다고 하다 = 간다고 했어요 (They said they are going) - 오다 -> 오 + ㄴ다고 하다 = 온다고 했어요 (They said they are coming) 2. Verb stem ending in a consonant: Add -는다고 하다 - 먹다 -> 먹 + 는다고 하다 = 먹는다고 했어요 (They said they are eating) - 읽다 -> 읽 + 는다고 하다 = 읽는다고 했어요 (They said they are reading)
Past and Future Tense Quoting¶
- Past: -았/었/였다고 하다 (갔다고 했어요 - Said they went)
- Future: -(으)ㄹ 거라고 하다 (갈 거라고 했어요 - Said they will go)
Examples¶
- 동생이 피자를 먹는다고 했어요. (My brother said he is eating pizza.)
- 친구가 내일 온다고 해요. (My friend says he is coming tomorrow.)
