Unit 20: Whether A Or B (-건 -건)

To express "regardless of whether it is A or B," you use the pattern -건 -건 (or -거냐 -거냐, -든 -든) in Easy Korean.

Structure

Verb 1 / Adj 1 + -건 + Verb 2 / Adj 2 + -건

It is a shortened form of -거나 (or). - 가다, 안 가다 -> 가건 안 가건 (Whether you go or don't go) - 크다, 작다 -> 크건 작건 (Whether it is big or small) - 비싸다, 싸다 -> 비싸건 싸건 (Whether it is expensive or cheap)

Examples

  • 비가 오건 안 오건 출발할 거예요. (Whether it rains or not, I will depart.)
  • 남들이 욕하건 말건 신경 안 써요. (Whether others curse at me or not, I don't care. - 말다: to stop/not do)
  • 비싸건 싸건 꼭 살 거예요. (Whether it's expensive or cheap, I will definitely buy it.)
