Unit 24: And, Therefore (그리고, 그래서)

Up until now, we have only been making short, single sentences. To start speaking more fluently, we need conjunctions to link our thoughts together!

Today we will learn two essential conjunction words: 그리고 and 그래서.

1. 그리고 (geu-ri-go) = And, And then

그리고 is used to link two sentences together, adding more information or describing a sequence of events.

  • Sentence 1. 그리고 Sentence 2.

Examples: * 저는 학생이에요. 그리고 미국 사람이에요. (I am a student. And, I am American.)

  • 친구를 만났어요. 그리고 밥을 먹었어요. (I met a friend. And then, we ate a meal.)

Note: In Korean, conjunctions are often placed at the beginning of the second sentence, rather than combining them into one long sentence (though you can do that with advanced grammar later).

2. 그래서 (geu-rae-seo) = Therefore, So

그래서 is used when the first sentence is the reason or cause for the second sentence.

  • Reason. 그래서 Result.

Examples: * 비가 왔어요. 그래서 집에 있었어요. (It rained. So, I stayed at home.)

  • 오늘 바빠요. 그래서 못 가요. (I am busy today. Therefore, I cannot go.)

  • 한국 음식을 좋아해요. 그래서 매일 먹어요. (I like Korean food. So, I eat it every day.)

Summary

  • 그리고 = And / And then (Adding info or sequence)
  • 그래서 = Therefore / So (Cause and effect)
