Easy Korean - Level 9, Unit 11: Rather than doing X... (-느니 차라리)¶
When you are faced with two bad or unfavorable options, and you want to say "Rather than doing X (which is terrible), I would rather do Y (which is slightly better)," you use the structure -느니 차라리.
Structure Breakdown¶
- -느니 = rather than (doing)
- 차라리 = rather / preferably
Note: You can omit '차라리', but it is almost always used together for emphasis.
How to Conjugate¶
You attach -느니 directly to the verb stem of the action you least prefer.
- 가다 -> 가느니 (Rather than going)
- 먹다 -> 먹느니 (Rather than eating)
- 포기하다 -> 포기하느니 (Rather than giving up)
- 살다 (ㄹ drops) -> 사느니 (Rather than living)
Compared to -보다 (than)¶
You learned earlier that -보다 means "than" (e.g., 이것보다 저것이 좋아요 = That one is better than this one). * -보다 is used for simple comparisons (X is better than Y). * -느니 차라리 is used for extreme preferences, usually when you dislike the first option so much that you'd choose a drastic alternative. (e.g., Rather than eating this, I'd rather starve!)
Example Sentences¶
