Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 17: Advanced Situational Expressions (Expressing Surprise)

In this lesson, we will look at how native speakers react when they are surprised or hear unbelievable news.

While "์ง„์งœ์š”?" (Really?) and "์ •๋ง์š”?" (Really?) are the standard polite ways, there are many colorful ways to show shock in Korean!

1. Casual / Natural Reactions (Oh my gosh!)

  • ํ—! (A very common slang interjection used when you are shocked, dismayed, or surprised. Similar to "Whoa" or "OMG".)
  • ๋Œ€๋ฐ•! (Awesome / Crazy / No way!)
  • ์„ธ์ƒ์—! / ์–ด๋จธ๋‚˜! (Oh my world! / Oh my goodness! - Often used by older generations or women.)

2. "Are you serious?" / "Are you kidding?"

When you can't believe what you're hearing. - ๊ฑฐ์ง“๋ง! / ๊ฑฐ์ง“๋งํ•˜์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”! (Lie! / Don't lie!) In Korean, shouting "Lie!" is a common way to say "No way!" or "I don't believe it." - ์ง„์‹ฌ์ด์—์š”? (Are you serious? / Is that your true heart?) - ๋†๋‹ด์ด์ฃ ? (It's a joke, right?)

3. Emphasizing the Shock

  • ๋ง๋„ ์•ˆ ๋ผ! (It makes no sense! / No way!)
  • ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ๊ทธ๋Ÿฐ ์ผ์ด ์žˆ์„ ์ˆ˜๊ฐ€ ์žˆ์ฃ ? (How could such a thing happen?)
  • ๊ฟˆ์ธ์ง€ ์ƒ์‹œ์ธ์ง€ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๊ฒ ์–ด์š”. (I don't know if this is a dream or reality. -> Pinch me!)

4. The Delayed Shock

When you hear something and it takes a moment to process. - ๋„ค? ์ž˜๋ชป ๋“ค์€ ๊ฑฐ ์•„๋‹ˆ์ฃ ? (Excuse me? I didn't mishear that, right?) - ๊ฐ‘์ž๊ธฐ ๊ทธ๊ฒŒ ๋ฌด์Šจ ์†Œ๋ฆฌ์˜ˆ์š”? (Suddenly, what are you talking about?)
