Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 27: Advanced Situational Expressions (Changing the subject)¶
In this lesson, we will look at how to naturally change the subject during a conversation. When a topic is getting boring, uncomfortable, or you just remembered something else, you can use these buffer phrases.
1. "By the way..." / "Anyway..."¶
The most standard ways to pivot a conversation. - ๊ทธ๋์ ๋... (Anyway / Be that as it may...) Usage: Very common in spoken Korean to shift from one topic to a completely different one. - ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ... / ๊ทผ๋ฐ... (By the way / But...) - ์๋ฌดํผ... / ์ด์จ๋ ... (Anyway / Regardless...)
2. "Speaking of which..."¶
When the current topic reminds you of something else. - ๋ง์ด ๋์์ ๋ง์ธ๋ฐ... (Since the words came out -> Speaking of which...) Example: ๋ง์ด ๋์์ ๋ง์ธ๋ฐ, ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ์ ์ฌ ์ธ์ ๋จน์ด? (Speaking of which, when are we eating lunch?) - ๊ทธ๋ฌ๊ณ ๋ณด๋๊น... (Now that I look at it / Come to think of it...)
3. "Let's stop talking about this."¶
When a topic is too heavy, depressing, or repetitive. - ์ด ์๊ธฐ๋ ๊ทธ๋งํฉ์๋ค. (Let's stop talking about this.) - ๋ถ์๊ธฐ๋ ๊ฟ๊ฟํ๋ฐ ๋ค๋ฅธ ์๊ธฐ ํ ๊น์? (The atmosphere is a bit gloomy, shall we talk about something else?) - ์ฃผ์ ๋ฅผ ์ข ๋ฐ๊ฟ ๋ณผ๊น์? (Shall we change the subject a bit?)
4. Remembering something suddenly¶
- ์, ๋ง๋ค! (Ah, right!)
- ์ฐธ! (Oh, by the way!) Example: ์ฐธ! ๋ ์ด์ ๋ณด๋ธ ์ด๋ฉ์ผ ๋ดค์ด? (Oh! Did you see the email I sent yesterday?)
Example Dialogue¶
A: ์์ฆ ํ์ฌ ์ผ์ด ๋๋ฌด ๋ง์์ ๋งค์ผ ์ผ๊ทผ์ด์์. ์ ๋ง ํผ๊ณคํด์. (I have so much work at the company lately, I work overtime every day. I'm really tired.) B: ์ ๋์. ์คํธ๋ ์ค ๋ฐ์์ ๋ฏธ์น๊ฒ ์ด์. (Me too. I'm going crazy from stress.) A: ์ฐ์ธํ ์๊ธฐ๋ ๊ทธ๋งํ ๊น์? ๊ทธ๋์ ๋, ์ด๋ฒ ์ฃผ๋ง์ ๋ญ ํด์? (Shall we stop talking about depressing things? Anyway, what are you doing this weekend?)
