Unit 6: Maybe Because (-아/어/여서 그런지)

When you want to guess the reason for a situation, meaning "maybe because [Reason], [Result]," you use -아/어/여서 그런지 in Easy Korean.

Structure

Verb / Adjective Stem + -아/어/여서 그런지

You take the standard "because" structure (-아/어/여서) and add 그런지 (which comes from 그렇다 + -(으)ㄴ지, meaning "whether it is so").

  • 바쁘다 -> 바빠서 -> 바빠서 그런지 (maybe because I am busy)
  • 피곤하다 -> 피곤해서 -> 피곤해서 그런지 (maybe because I am tired)
  • 비가 오다 -> 비가 와서 -> 비가 와서 그런지 (maybe because it is raining)

Examples

  • 주말이어서 그런지 사람이 많아요. (Maybe because it's the weekend, there are a lot of people. Noun + 이어서)
  • 날씨가 더워서 그런지 입맛이 없어요. (Maybe because the weather is hot, I have no appetite.)
  • 잠을 많이 자서 그런지 기분이 좋아요. (Maybe because I slept a lot, I feel good.)
