Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 3: Location Words (Front, Back, Side, etc.)

In this unit, we will learn how to describe where things are located. We will use position words and the location particle ์— (e) which means "at" or "in".

Basic Position Words

Here are the most common words used to describe locations relative to an object:

  • ์•ž (ap) = front
  • ๋’ค (dwi) = back / behind
  • ์˜† (yeop) = side / next to
  • ์œ„ (wi) = top / over / above
  • ๋ฐ‘ (mit) / ์•„๋ž˜ (a-rae) = bottom / under / below
  • ์•ˆ (an) = inside
  • ๋ฐ– (bak) = outside
  • ์‚ฌ์ด (sa-i) = between

How to use them

To say that something is in a specific position relative to a noun, you use this structure: Noun + Position Word + ์—

  • ์ฑ…์ƒ ์œ„ (chaek-sang wi) = top of the desk
  • ์ฑ…์ƒ ์œ„์— (chaek-sang wi-e) = on top of the desk

  • ์ง‘ ์•ž (jip ap) = front of the house

  • ์ง‘ ์•ž์— (jip a-pe) = in front of the house

Describing where something is

We usually combine these location phrases with the verbs ์žˆ๋‹ค (to be/exist) and ์—†๋‹ค (to not be/not exist).

  • ์€ํ–‰์€ ํ•™๊ต ์˜†์— ์žˆ์–ด์š”. (The bank is next to the school.)
  • ๊ณ ์–‘์ด๊ฐ€ ์˜์ž ๋ฐ‘์— ์žˆ์–ด์š”. (The cat is under the chair.)
  • ๊ฐ€๋ฐฉ ์•ˆ์— ์ง€๊ฐ‘์ด ์—†์–ด์š”. (The wallet is not inside the bag.)

"Between" (์‚ฌ์ด)

When using ์‚ฌ์ด (between), you usually need two nouns. You connect them with ํ•˜๊ณ  or (์ด)๋ž‘, meaning "and."

Noun 1 + ํ•˜๊ณ /๋ž‘ + Noun 2 + ์‚ฌ์ด์—

  • ์•ฝ๊ตญ์€ ๋ณ‘์›ํ•˜๊ณ  ์€ํ–‰ ์‚ฌ์ด์— ์žˆ์–ด์š”. (The pharmacy is between the hospital and the bank.)
