Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 22: Might, Could -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다

In this unit, we will learn how to express possibility or probability. When you want to say "It might happen" or "I could do that," you use the structure -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다.

Structure Breakdown

Let's look at the pieces: * -(으)ㄹ : Future / hypothetical modifier * 수 : Idea, way, or possibility * 도 : Also / even * 있다 : To exist

Literally, it means "The possibility [to do X] also exists." In natural English: "might" or "could."

How to Conjugate

1. Verb/Adjective stem ends in a VOWEL: Add -ㄹ 수도 있다 * 가다 (to go) -> 가 + ㄹ 수도 있다 = 갈 수도 있어요 (I might go) * 아프다 (to be sick) -> 아프 + ㄹ 수도 있다 = 아플 수도 있어요 (They might be sick) * 비싸다 (expensive) -> 비싸 + ㄹ 수도 있다 = 비쌀 수도 있어요 (It might be expensive)

2. Verb/Adjective stem ends in a CONSONANT: Add -을 수도 있다 * 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹 + 을 수도 있다 = 먹을 수도 있어요 (I might eat) * 작다 (small) -> 작 + 을 수도 있다 = 작을 수도 있어요 (It might be small)

3. Stem ends in ㄹ: Just add -수도 있다 * 알다 (to know) -> 알 수도 있어요 (They might know)

Example Sentences

  1. 내일 비가 올 수도 있어요. (It might rain tomorrow.)
  2. 이 음식은 조금 매울 수도 있어요. (This food might be a little spicy. - 맵다 + 을 수도 있다)

  4. A: 진우 씨가 올까요? (Do you think Jin-woo will come?) B: 아마 안 올 수도 있어요. (He probably might not come.)

Note on "Probably" (아마도)

Koreans frequently use the word 아마 (a-ma) or 아마도 (a-ma-do) at the beginning of the sentence to emphasize the guessing nature of this grammar structure.

  • 아마 진짜일 수도 있어요. (It probably might be real.)
