Level 8 Unit 05: Native Spoken Rhetoric & Humility (-기는 뭘요, -기 짝이 없다, -(으)ㄹ 따름이다)

Level 8 conversational Korean incorporates sophisticated cultural etiquette: elegant modesty, peerless emotional emphasis, and solemn humility.

1. -기는 뭘요 / -기는요 (Elegant Native Modesty / Deflecting Compliments)

In Korean culture, directly accepting praise ("Yes, I am amazing") can seem boastful. -기는 뭘요 or -기는요 politely deflects praise with natural grace.

Structure:

[Compliment Root] + -기는 뭘요 / -기는요

Examples:

  • A: "한국어 발음이 원어민처럼 완벽하시네요!"
B: "완벽하기는 뭘요, 아직 배울 게 훨씬 많은데요."
(A: "Your Korean pronunciation is as perfect as a native speaker!" / B: "Oh, far from perfect! I still have so much more to learn.")
  • A: "이번 발표 정말 훌륭했습니다!"
B: "훌륭하기는요, 팀원들이 많이 도와준 덕분입니다."
(A: "The presentation was truly outstanding!" / B: "Not at all, it was thanks to the big help from my teammates.")

2. -기 짝이 없다 (Utmost / Incomparable Degree / "Peerlessly...")

Expresses that an emotion or condition has reached its absolute peak (literally: "has no pair / no equivalent match").

Structure:

[Adjective Stem] + -기 짝이 없다

Examples:

  • 오랜 친구를 불의의 사고로 떠나보내게 되어 안타깝기 짝이 없습니다.
(Having to part with a longtime friend in an unexpected accident is sorrowful beyond words / peerlessly tragic.)
  • 이렇게 큰 상을 받게 되어 영광스럽기 짝이 없습니다.
(Receiving such a prestigious award is incomparably glorious.)
  • 그런 무책임한 태도는 한심하기 짝이 없다.
(Such an irresponsible attitude is pathetic beyond measure.)

3. -(으)ㄹ 따름이다 (Solemn Humility / "Can Only... / Nothing More Than...")

Expresses deep humility, reverence, or solemn resignation: stating that the speaker is merely doing or feeling one thing, with no other pretension.

Structure:

[Verb/Adj Stem] + -(으)ㄹ 따름이다

Examples:

  • 도와주신 모든 분들께 그저 감사할 따름입니다.
(To everyone who helped, I can only offer my deepest gratitude.)
  • 저는 제게 주어진 본분을 다했을 따름입니다.
(I merely fulfilled the duty that was assigned to me and nothing more.)
  • 국민들의 뜻을 겸허히 수용할 따름이다.
(We can only humbly accept the will of the citizens.)
