Unit 16: Location Markers (에 vs 에서)

In English, we use prepositions like "in", "at", or "on" to describe where something happens. In Korean, we use particles attached to the end of a location noun.

The two most common location particles are 에 and 에서. Although they both translate to "in" or "at", they are used in completely different situations!

1. 에 (e) = Existence or Direction

You use 에 when talking about: 1. Where something exists (used with 있어요/없어요) 2. Where you are going to (used with 가다/오다)

Think of '에' as a simple pin on a map.

Examples: * 학교에 있어요. = I am at school. (Existence) * 집에 가요. = I am going to home. (Direction) * 한국에 없어요. = I am not in Korea.

2. 에서 (e-seo) = Action

You use 에서 when talking about: 1. Where an action takes place.

If you are actively doing something at a location (eating, studying, sleeping, meeting friends), you MUST use 에서.

Think of '에서' as a stage where a play is happening.

Examples: * 학교에서 공부해요. = I study at school. (Action) * 집에서 자요. = I sleep at home. (Action) * 식당에서 먹었어요. = I ate at the restaurant. (Action)

3. The Ultimate Test: 에 vs 에서

Let's look at the word "집" (home).

  • 집에 있어요 = I am at home. (Just existing there -> 에)
  • 집에서 일해요 = I work at home. (Doing an action -> 에서)

What about going somewhere? * 식당에 가요 = I am going to the restaurant. (Direction -> 에) * 식당에서 만나요 = Let's meet at the restaurant. (Action -> 에서)

Summary

  • 에 = Used for existence (있어요) or direction (가다).
  • 에서 = Used when an active verb is happening at that location.
