Unit 6: Quoting Adjectives (-다고 하다)

In Level 5 of Easy Korean, quoting is a very important skill! If you want to quote a statement, meaning "Someone said that...", the rules depend on whether the word is an adjective, verb, or noun.

Let's start with Adjectives (Descriptive Verbs).

Structure

Adjective Stem + -다고 하다 (or -다고 했어요 for "said")

It is extremely simple! You just drop '다' from the dictionary form of the adjective and attach -다고 하다.

  • 바쁘다 (to be busy) -> 바쁘다고 했어요 (They said they are busy)
  • 맛있다 (to be delicious) -> 맛있다고 했어요 (They said it is delicious)
  • 비싸다 (to be expensive) -> 비싸다고 했어요 (They said it is expensive)

Examples

  • 지민 씨가 한국어가 어렵다고 했어요. (Jimin said that Korean is difficult.)
  • 친구가 그 영화가 재미있다고 해요. (My friend says that the movie is fun.)
  • 날씨가 춥다고 했어요. (They said the weather is cold.)
