Unit 17: Can / Cannot (-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다)

Structure

• Can: Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 수 있다
• Cannot: Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 수 없다

Rules (Same as Future Tense!)

1. Verb stem ending in a vowel: Add -ㄹ 수 있다
2. 가다 (to go) -> 갈 수 있어요 (I can go)

3. 보다 (to see) -> 볼 수 있어요 (I can see)

4. Verb stem ending in a consonant: Add -을 수 있다

5. 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹을 수 있어요 (I can eat)

6. 읽다 (to read) -> 읽을 수 있어요 (I can read)

7. Verb stem ending in ㄹ: Add -수 있다

8. 만들다 (to make) -> 만들 수 있어요 (I can make)

Examples

• 한국어를 할 수 있어요? (Can you speak Korean?)
• 아니요, 할 수 없어요. (No, I cannot.)
• 매운 음식을 먹을 수 있어요. (I can eat spicy food.)
