Unit 11: There Is No Way (-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다)

When you strongly doubt something and want to say "it is impossible" or "there is no way that is true," you use -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 in Easy Korean.

Structure

Verb / Adjective Stem + -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다

  • 가다 -> 갈 리가 없어요 (There is no way they are going)
  • 바쁘다 -> 바쁠 리가 없어요 (There is no way they are busy)
  • 모르다 -> 모를 리가 없어요 (There is no way they don't know = They definitely know)

(For past tense, attach to the past stem: 갔을 리가 없어요 - There is no way they went)

Examples

  • 그 사람이 거짓말을 할 리가 없어요. (There is no way that person is lying.)
  • 오늘이 일요일일 리가 없어요. (There is no way today is Sunday.)
  • 안 먹어봤으니까 맛을 알 리가 없죠. (Since they haven't tried it, there's no way they know the taste.)
