Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 18: Advanced Situational Expressions (Showing Interest)¶
In Korean culture, active listening (๋ฆฌ์ก์ - reactions) is extremely important in conversations. If you just nod silently, the speaker might think you are bored.
In this lesson, we will learn how to show interest and encourage the other person to keep talking!
1. The Power of "๊ทธ๋์์?"¶
When someone is telling a story and pauses, you should prompt them to continue. - ๊ทธ๋์์? (And then? / So what happened?) - ๊ทธ๋์ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ๋์ด์? (So how did it turn out?)
2. Empathizing Reactions (Listening sounds)¶
Koreans use a lot of short interjections to show they are following along. - ์~ / ์ค~ / ์ฐ์~ (Ah~ / Oh~ / Wow~) - ์ด๋จธ, ์ฌ์ผ์ด์ผ. (Oh my, what in the world / what a surprise. - Used when hearing gossip or shocking news.) - ๋ง์์, ๋ง์์. (Right, right.) - ๊ทธ๋ ๊ตฌ๋~ / ๊ทธ๋ฌ๊ฒ์. (I see~ / Tell me about it.)
3. Asking for details: "Tell me more!"¶
When you want the juicy details! - ์์ธํ ์ข ์๊ธฐํด ๋ด์. (Tell me about it in detail.) - ๋ฌด์จ ์ผ ์์์ด์? (Did something happen?) - ๋์ฒด ์ ๊ทธ๋ฐ ๊ฑฐ์์? (Why on earth did they do that?)
4. Showing Fascination¶
- ๋๋ฌด ํฅ๋ฏธ๋กญ๋ค์. (That is so interesting/fascinating.)
- ๊ท๊ฐ ์๊นํด์ง๋ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ๋ค์. (It's a story that makes my ears perk up. -> It's very tempting/interesting.)
Example Dialogue¶
A: ์ ์ด์ ๊ธธ์์ ์ฐ์ฐํ ์ ๋จ์์น๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋ง๋ฌ์ด์. (I ran into my ex-boyfriend on the street yesterday by chance.) B: ์ด๋จธ, ์ฌ์ผ์ด์ผ! ๊ทธ๋์ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ๋์ด์? (Oh my, what a surprise! So what happened?) A: ๋์ด ๋ง์ฃผ์ณค๋๋ฐ ๋ชจ๋ฅธ ์ฒํ๊ณ ์ง๋๊ฐ์ด์. (We made eye contact, but we pretended not to know each other and passed by.) B: ์ง์ง์? ์์ธํ ์ข ์๊ธฐํด ๋ด์. ํ์ ์ด ์ด๋ ์ด์? (Really? Tell me in detail. What was his expression like?)
