Easy Korean - Level 3, Unit 16: Let's do it!¶
In Korean, the way you say "Let's..." depends entirely on who you are talking to. There are three main ways to make a suggestion.
1. Polite & Natural: -์/์ด/์ฌ์¶
The most common way to say "Let's" in everyday polite conversation is actually just the standard present tense ending -์/์ด/์ฌ์. You distinguish it from a normal statement by your tone of voice and context (and often by adding "์ฐ๋ฆฌ" - we/us).
- ์์ํด์. (We are starting. OR Let's start.)
- ๋ด์ผ ๋ง๋์. (We meet tomorrow. OR Let's meet tomorrow.)
- ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ๊ฐ์ด ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์ด์. (Let's eat together.)
2. Formal: -(์ผ)ใ ์๋ค¶
When you are in a formal setting, giving a presentation, or speaking to a group, you use -(์ผ)ใ ์๋ค. Note: Do NOT use this with older people or your boss, as it can sound bossy or overly commanding. Use -์/์ด/์ฌ์ instead.
- Vowel stem: Add -ใ
์๋ค
- ๊ฐ๋ค -> ๊ฐ์๋ค (Let's go.)
- Consonant stem: Add -์์๋ค
- ๋จน๋ค -> ๋จน์์๋ค (Let's eat.)
3. Casual / Intimate: -์¶
When you are speaking to close friends, people younger than you, or in "๋ฐ๋ง" (casual speech), you attach -์ to the verb stem.
- ๊ฐ๋ค -> ๊ฐ์ (Let's go!)
- ํ๋ค -> ํ์ (Let's do it!)
- ๋จน๋ค -> ๋จน์ (Let's eat!)
Summary Example: "Let's go"¶
- ๊ฐ์ (Polite / Normal)
- ๊ฐ์๋ค (Formal / Group setting)
- ๊ฐ์ (Casual / Friends only)
