Easy Korean Level 4 - Unit 22: Because, Since / -(으)니까

In Level 2, we learned -아/어/여서 (because, so). In this lesson, we will learn another very common way to say "because" or "since": -(으)니까.

So, what is the difference between -아/어/여서 and -(으)니까?

Key Differences

1. Endings: - -아/어/여서 CANNOT be used with imperative (commands like "Do this") or propositive (suggestions like "Let's...") endings. CAN be used with commands and suggestions! (Since it's raining, please use an umbrella.) (Since we're late, let's go quickly!)

2. Tense Markers: - -아/어/여서 CANNOT be attached to past/future tense markers. CAN be attached to past/future tense markers! (Since I was sick yesterday, I went to the hospital.) (Also correct, no past marker before -서).
