Easy Korean - Level 9, Unit 1: Not only... but also (-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라)

Welcome to Level 9! We are now covering advanced Korean grammar patterns. Our first pattern is -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라, which means "Not only A, but also B."

Structure Breakdown

  • -(으)ㄹ 뿐 = only (the state/action of doing)
  • 만 = only
  • 아니라 = not (아니다 + 라서/라) Literally: "It is not only [X], but..."

How to Conjugate

You can use this with verbs, adjectives, and nouns.

1. Verbs & Adjectives (Present Tense)

Vowel stem: Add -ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 * 가다 -> 갈 뿐만 아니라 (Not only goes, but...) * 싸다 -> 쌀 뿐만 아니라 (Not only is it cheap, but...)

Consonant stem: Add -을 뿐만 아니라 * 먹다 -> 먹을 뿐만 아니라 (Not only eats, but...) * 좋다 -> 좋을 뿐만 아니라 (Not only is it good, but...)

ㄹ stem: Add -뿐만 아니라 * 만들다 -> 만들 뿐만 아니라 (Not only makes, but...)

2. Past Tense

Attach it to the past tense stem (-았/었/였). * 했다 -> 했을 뿐만 아니라 (Not only did they do it, but...) * 갔다 -> 갔을 뿐만 아니라 (Not only did he go, but...)

3. Nouns

Attach 뿐만 아니라 directly to the noun. (Sometimes -(이)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 is used if 'to be' is implied). * 학생 -> 학생뿐만 아니라 (Not only students, but...) * 한국어 -> 한국어뿐만 아니라 (Not only Korean, but...)
