Easy Korean Level 10 - Unit 25: Advanced Situational Expressions (Saying Goodbye / Wrapping up)

In this lesson, we will look at how to gracefully wrap up a conversation and say goodbye. Saying "์•ˆ๋…•ํžˆ ๊ณ„์„ธ์š”" (Goodbye) out of nowhere can feel abrupt. Native speakers use buffer phrases to signal that they are leaving.

1. Excusing yourself to leave

When you are at a gathering or meeting and need to go. - ์ œ๊ฐ€ ๋จผ์ € ์ผ์–ด๋‚˜ ๋ณด๊ฒ ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. (I will try getting up first -> I should get going.) - ์˜ค๋Š˜์€ ์ด๋งŒ ๊ฐ€ ๋ณผ๊ฒŒ์š”. (I will go for today.) - ์‹œ๊ฐ„์ด ๋Šฆ์–ด์„œ ์Šฌ์Šฌ ๊ฐ€ ๋ด์•ผ๊ฒ ๋„ค์š”. (It's late, so I should slowly get going.)

2. Wrapping up a phone call

Koreans often use specific phrases to end phone conversations smoothly. - ๊ทธ๋Ÿผ ์ด๋”ฐ๊ฐ€ ๋‹ค์‹œ ์—ฐ๋ฝ๋“œ๋ฆด๊ฒŒ์š”. (Then I will contact you again later.) - ๋„ค, ์•Œ๊ฒ ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. ๋“ค์–ด๊ฐ€์„ธ์š”~ (Yes, understood. Please go in -> A standard polite sign-off on the phone.) - ๋„ค, ๋Š์„๊ฒŒ์š”. (Yes, I'll hang up now.)

3. Leaving work

When leaving the office while others are still working. - ๋จผ์ € ํ‡ด๊ทผํ•˜๊ฒ ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. (I will get off work first.) - ๋‚ด์ผ ๋ต™๊ฒ ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. (See you tomorrow.) - ๋จผ์ € ๋“ค์–ด๊ฐ€ ๋ณด๊ฒ ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. ์ˆ˜๊ณ ํ•˜์„ธ์š”. (I will go in first. Keep up the good work.)

4. Parting words with a friend

  • ์กฐ์‹ฌํ•ด์„œ ๋“ค์–ด๊ฐ€. (Go in safely -> Get home safely.)
  • ๋„์ฐฉํ•˜๋ฉด ์—ฐ๋ฝํ•ด. (Contact me when you arrive.)
  • ๋‹ค์Œ์— ๋˜ ๋ด! / ๋‚˜์ค‘์— ๋ณด์ž! (See you next time! / See you later!)
